Osage Orange

Osage Orange (Maclura pomifera) - This tree, sometimes known as Bois d’Arc, is native throughout much of Central Texas. An extremely durable wood. The wood has a beautiful amber color that turns a rich golden brown with age. It’s fruit is the familiar green, round and coarse textured ball about the size of an apple, sometimes referred to as "horse apple." Long ago, this strong flexible wood was used for making hunting bows, hence the name "Bois d’Arc. Osage orange is an extremely hardy tree. Its stumps were used decades ago for supporting pier-and-beam houses that are still intact today. The coarse craggy nature of the tree brings a wonderful texture to the landscape. The wood is extremely hard and seldom found as lumber supply.
